The Société Ivoirienne de Raffinage was founded in 1962 and three years later, in 1965, the SIR refinery came on stream. The facility initially covered a surface area of 40 hectares but this has since doubled. Equipped with two crude distillation units and a hydrocracker, SIR has a nameplate capacity of 3.8 million tonnes per year. In addition to sales in Cote d’Ivoire, SIR markets its products in Africa and beyond. Logistical facilities at the plant include 12 crude storage tanks, 72 product tanks, 02 terminals and 04 jetties. SIR switched from a pneumatic to a digital production management system. All its processes are now managed from a single blast-proof control room called Quadripôle.

The largest company by turnover in Côte d’Ivoire, SIR is a member of the Solomon Club, an international organization which compares the performance of refineries across the world. All of SIR’s product lines are ISO 9001-certified 2015 version (Quality) and SIR is ISO 14001-certified 2015 version (Environment) and the performance of its facilities has earned many other honours. These include a COFRAC (French Accreditation Committee) accreditation for the plant’s laboratory, an Ivorian Award for Quality, GESIP Safety Awards (Chemical and Petroleum Industry Safety Assessment Group) and a level 8 ISRS rating (International Safety Rating System).
